The DIAGNOdent is a brand new way to find dental caries that are sometimes too small to detect with traditional x-rays or manual probing. By using this technology, we can treat cavities when they are very small. In this manner, we can prevent larger fillings which cost more, and more importantly, require us to remove more tooth structure. DIAGNOdent operates by means of laser energy. The light is passed through an optical cable and causes the areas of decay to fluoresce. This information is passed back up through the probe and the reading is displayed visually and audibly. By using the DIAGNOdent, we can prevent small cavities from being misdiagnosed. Patients do not feel a thing when we use the DIAGNOdent. All we are doing is shining a light on the tooth and getting a reading. Research shows as much as 50% of cavities go undetected and this is where the DIAGNOdent can really help us out as a 2nd means of cavity detection.
