We place composite resin fillings at our office and there are multiple reasons for it. Amalgam or “silver” fillings do only one thing well and that is replace missing tooth structure. Because they are placed by retention the teeth have to be undercut. Over the years the metal fillings put stress and strain on your tooth structure creating fractures and eventually causing the tooth to break.
Amalgam fillings also have mercury in them and your greatest exposure is when you are placing them and taking them out. We don’t know many patients these days that want to get fillings with mercury in them nor do we want to work around it!
Composite bonds to the tooth structure allowing us to be more conservative and thus making fillings that last longer and do not ruin the teeth around them!
